The Fight Against Animal Testing in Cosmetics The makeup industry has flourished for as long as one can remember. The popularity of beauty bloggers, celebrity makeup lines, etc. have actually led to a record-breaking boost in makeup sales. Cosmetic brands have become more prominent, and makeup stores such as Sephora and Ulta continue to thrive. However, various demands must be met in order to keep up with the growing consumership, and one of the most controversial topics contributing to the success of the makeup industry is animal testing. Animal testing has been a hotly contested topic for decades, yet still exists to this very day; it is an unethical and harmful way to measure the potential side effects of cosmetic products, and an†¦show more content†¦Ian Murnaghan, a medical writer, explains the animals are usually â€Å"euthanized†, or killed, after experiments. This proves that the animals that are used in experiments are seen as unworthy and unimportant to the scientists and/or companies conducting the experiments. For the vast majority of the animals involved in experimentation, the distress they have been put through is irreversible. They cannot withstand being put into the wild or being adopted by humans, so they are usually killed (Murnaghan). The permanent struggles animals endure due to testing prove the practice to be inhumane and cruel. While certain animals are tested for medical reasons, some are used to test cosmetics. Cosmetic products include makeup items, perfumes, hair products, makeup brushes, lotions, soaps, etc.. â€Å"Alternatives to Animal Testing† states â€Å"Regulatory agencies require testing of consumer products, medicines, and industrial and agricultural chemicals to identify potential health and safety hazards†, meaning that testing of some kind is required before cosmetics can be sold. If makeup was not tested, it could be sold to millions of people and possibly cause harm. The damage caused by u ntested cosmetics could result in companies losing an incredible amount of money, and lessening said companies’ reliability.
